Understanding the Different Types of Polyester Yarn and Their Uses

Polyester yarn is a synthetic fiber yarn that is widely used in textiles, clothing, industry, and household goods due to its excellent strength, wear resistance, heat resistance, and easy maintenance. With the continuous advancement of textile technology, the types of polyester yarns are becoming more and more diverse, and each type has specific properties and uses.

I. Classification by manufacturing process

1. Polyester filament (Filament Yarn)
Polyester filament is a continuous yarn with excellent luster and smooth texture. According to its different stretching processes, it can be further divided into:

Plain filament (FDY, Fully Drawn Yarn): After full stretching, it has good strength and stability and is commonly used in clothing fabrics, home textiles, bags, etc.

Partially Oriented Yarn (POY): Filament that is not fully stretched, generally used for subsequent processing into stretch yarn

Draw Textured Yarn (DTY, Draw Textured Yarn): POY that has been deformed has good elasticity and velvety feel, and is widely used in sportswear, underwear, socks, etc.

2. Spun Yarn
Spun yarn is made by spinning cut polyester staple fibers, and has a texture similar to that of natural fibers. It is often used in blends with cotton, viscose, etc. to improve the softness and comfort of the fabric, and is suitable for making T-shirts, bedding, towels, etc.

II. Classification by yarn structure
1. Single Yarn
It consists of a strand of continuous filament or staple yarn, with a simple structure and low cost, but slightly lower strength, and is mostly used in ordinary household textiles.

2. Ply Yarn
It is made of two or more strands of single yarn, with higher strength and anti-pilling properties, and is often used for fabrics with high strength requirements such as industrial fabrics, canvas and carpets.

3. Air Textured Yarn (ATY)
Use compressed air to disrupt the filaments to form a yarn that imitates the structure of natural fibers. It feels softer and more natural, and is suitable for high-end clothing and home fabrics.

III. Classification by Functionality
1. Moisture-wicking Polyester Yarn
After special finishing, polyester has good moisture-wicking function and is widely used in sportswear and functional underwear.

2. Antibacterial and Deodorant Polyester Yarn
By adding antibacterial agents such as silver ions, it can effectively inhibit the growth of bacteria and is commonly found in medical textiles and underwear.

3. Flame-retardant Polyester Yarn
After adding flame retardants, it can achieve a specific fire resistance level and is suitable for scenes such as curtains, work clothes, and vehicle interiors.

4. Recycled Polyester Yarn
It is made from recycled polyester raw materials from waste plastic bottles or old clothes. It is in line with the trend of sustainable development and is widely used in environmentally friendly clothing, shopping bags, and home textiles.

Polyester yarn has become an indispensable material in the modern textile industry due to its diverse processing methods and powerful functional expansion. Different types of polyester yarns meet diverse needs from daily wear to industrial production. With the continuous integration of environmental protection and technology, polyester yarns in the future will pay more attention to ecological sustainability and functional innovation, bringing more possibilities to the textile industry.
